Embracing love and inclusion: Couples with disabilities attend Nigeria Connectors event

In a beautiful display of compassion and inclusivity, a ground-breaking social program unfolded in Umuahia, Abia State, on February 14th, 2024. Couples with disabilities gathered at the Kolping Society Event Centre for a heartfelt Valentines Day celebration.

The event – “Couples with Disabilities Hangout Abia 2024” – was not just a festive occasion; it symbolized a significant effort to dismantle the barriers and stigma faced by individuals with disabilities in our communities. Organized by a coalition of compassionate organizations including the Global Compassion Coalition Nigeria, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Abia State Chapter, and Another Chance International Vocational Center for Nigerians with Disabilities, this initiative aimed to foster hope, belonging, and fulfilment among couples with disabilities.

At its core, the event was an important reminder that love knows no bounds and that every individual deserves the opportunity to experience joy and companionship. The festivities kicked off with a diverse array of activities designed to uplift spirits and strengthen bonds. From a lively dancing competition to inspiring messages delivered by esteemed guests, including representatives from GCC Nigeria and other supporting organizations, the day was brimming with love and camaraderie.

A highlight of the event was the exchange of gifts among the couples, symbolizing not only affection but also solidarity and support within the community. Additionally, a Skills Exhibition showcased the talents and capabilities of individuals with disabilities, challenging preconceived notions and celebrating their unique contributions to society.

Laughter echoed throughout the venue as attendees enjoyed comedic performances, further reinforcing the message that disability does not diminish the capacity for joy and laughter. The cutting of the Valentine (Love) cake by the couples, alongside those born in February, served as a sweet reminder of the shared humanity and interconnectedness that binds us all together.

The success of the Couples with Disabilities Hangout Abia 2024 was made possible through the collaborative efforts of numerous organizations and individuals committed to promoting compassion and inclusion. Special recognition is owed to Bishop Dr. Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha of Vision Africa, Grand Patron of JONAPWD, Southeast Nigeria, and all supporting organizations for their unwavering dedication and support.

In his heartfelt vote of thanks, Hon Wisdom Okechukwu Kalu, Leader of JONAPWD in Abia and Southeast Nigeria, expressed profound gratitude for the transformative impact of the event. He emphasized that beyond the festivities, the event served as a beacon of hope, reaffirming the belief that a compassionate and inclusive society is not just a distant dream but an achievable reality.

As we reflect on this momentous occasion, let us carry forward the spirit of love and inclusion, ensuring that every individual, regardless of ability, is embraced and empowered to live a life of dignity and fulfillment. Together, let us continue to build a world where compassion knows no bounds and where every heart finds its rightful place in the tapestry of humanity.
