Responding to the Akosombo Dam spillage

A group of our Connectors in Ghana, led by Meshach Bondize, are desperately trying to help the victims of the recent spillage at Akosombo Dam in southern Ghana. Meshach’s volunteers report that over 33,000 people in the eight districts closest to the dam have been affected. Homes, refuse sites, toilet facilities, and cemeteries have all been flooded – raising concerns of disease contagion. Water and electricity has been cut off. The disruption to the local economy is going to be enormous as is the upheaval to children’s education. The communities living adjacent to the Akosombo Dam are in urgent need of support but the government is struggling to mobilise resources. Our volunteers are seeking funds to:

  • Provide relief items like food and clean water
  • Construct 3,000 temporary housing units
  • Offer schooling and skills training to the displaced young people.
